Stenocactus

Stenocactus is a fascinating genus of small, globular cacti native to Mexico, prized for their dramatic, undulating ribs and intricate spine patterns. Sometimes still referred to by its former name Echinofossulocactus, this genus is a favourite among collectors who appreciate architectural form and texture.

Unlike many cacti with straight, evenly spaced ribs, Stenocactus species feature numerous thin wavy ribs that create a sculptural, almost corrugated appearance. These rippling ribs help the plant expand and contract efficiently during rainfall and drought, making them exceptionally well adapted to arid environments.

Always the first to bloom at the end of Winter and early Spring, with relatively large flowers compared to their body size. The contrast between their intricate rib structure and delicate blooms makes them especially eye catching.
